    6 Types of Vision Disorders

    Last updated 3 months ago

According to the National Health and Nutritional Examination survey (NHANES), nearly 50% of the entire U.S. population is affected by a vision disorder. If your vision is not as clear as it used to be then it may be time to visit your Annapolis eye care doctor. Before you schedule a consultation, consider some of the most common types of vision disorders.

    Myopia
Also known as nearsightedness, occurs when an eye is longer or has a steeper cornea. This causes light rays to focus at a specific point in front of your retina rather than directly on the surface, making objects at a distance appear blurred. Nearsighted individuals often suffer from headaches, eye strain, and fatigue.

    Hyperopia
Also known as farsightedness, hyperopia occurs when an eye is shorter or has a flatter cornea forcing light to focus behind the retina making near and distant objects appear blurred.

    Astigmatism
Astigmatism is caused by a steeping or irregularly shaped cornea that causes light to focus unevenly, causing blurred vision.

    Presbyopia
Presbyopia occurs when the lens inside of your eye loses elasticity and the ability to focus. This degenerative condition cannot be prevented, but can be easily corrected by laser vision correction, multifocal contact lenses, contact lenses with monovision, and glasses.

    Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of your natural lens. The most common symptoms of a cataract include blurred vision, glare, light sensitivity, impaired night vision, double vision, and frequent changes in eyewear prescription.

    Glaucoma
Glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve. Associated with intraocular pressure, glaucoma can eventually lead to loss of  nerve fibers, resulting in loss of peripheral vision and possibly if untreated blindness.

No matter which type of vision disorder or refractive error, eye care doctors with the Chesapeake Eye Care & Laser Center provide the best Lasik, cataract surgery, and glaucoma treatments available. Call us today at (410) 571-8733 and let us help you determine which treatment method best fits your needs.
